Success in STEM was founded by three passionate and highly experienced educators, Chloe, Kate, and Ruth, who share a commitment to helping students excel in their science studies. With decades of experience teaching in top UK independent schools, examining for various exam boards, and mentoring students through the UCAS process, we provide the highest quality tutoring to help every student reach their full potential.
I am a qualified teacher, having studied for my PGCE with QTS (Qualified Teaching Status) at the University of Buckingham. I worked full-time at the London day school, Alleyn’s, for 14 years and trained at Langley Park Boys School during my first year. Both schools were amazing places to work and gave me a huge amount of opportunity to work with a range of students and use a raft of teaching methodologies as well as coming up with a variety of ways to tackle misconceptions and make learning Physics seem easy. My biggest compliment was when a parent contacted the school to ask if I could make my lessons harder. Physics isn’t a difficult subject if you find the right way to approach it and finding the right person or resource to guide you.
I have grown up surrounded by science and have gained A grades in my GCSE, A Level, and 1st in my degree from Bristol University. I enjoy unpicking misconceptions to support students who need help accessing these ideas. I equally enjoy supporting students who find science and maths second nature, but then need a structure so they can communicate it with clarity.
In addition to my teaching roles, I continue to examine externally, this year I am examining A Level Physics for the Edexcel board. In other years I have examined for AQA and GCSE. This experience keeps me up to date with educational standards. It also gives invaluable insights into exam criteria so I can fully support my students in achieving their goals.
I have always been fascinated by the intricacies of science, particularly Chemistry. This passion led me to study Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at Oxford University, where I gained a deep understanding of the subject and developed a love for sharing knowledge. After completing my Master's degree, I decided to channel my enthusiasm for science into teaching.
For the past 20 years, I have taught Chemistry at some of the UK’s most prestigious independent schools, including Sevenoaks School, Alleyn’s School, and Bancroft’s School. During this time, I have helped hundreds of students achieve top grades and gain entry into leading universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. My experience has given me a profound understanding of how to tailor lessons to different learning styles and the confidence to guide students through the challenges of GCSE and A-Level Chemistry.
Beyond the classroom, I have supported students’ academic journeys by mentoring aspiring medics and coaching students through the university application process. I’m particularly passionate about helping students achieve their full potential, whether through one-on-one sessions or group learning environments.
Now, as a full-time tutor, I bring this wealth of experience directly to students, offering engaging, focused lessons that make Chemistry approachable and enjoyable. I’m dedicated to helping each student build confidence in their understanding and develop the skills they need to succeed. I am also a governor at a local school, a role I thoroughly enjoy and deeply value being involved in.
The problem with Biology for many people is not the subject itself; people love the subject. The challenge lies in the sheer amount of content to learn and the specificity of the mark schemes. Even when students know the correct answers, they often miss out on marks because they cannot articulate them in the required way. That’s where I come in. I help students break down the content, remember it, and understand how to 'jump through the hoops' to gain maximum marks and achieve the best outcomes.
My experience as Head of Biology for over 10 years at Alleyn’s School, one of the most prestigious private schools in London, and as a teacher for 17 years, means I am uniquely placed to help support students through their GCSEs and A Levels. I have successfully helped hundreds of students achieve the highest grades and secure their places at top universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.
My degree in Neuroscience from the University of Nottingham has equipped me with a profound understanding of how different brains learn and develop. It also gives me insight into cognitive science and how we learn, retain, and recall complex knowledge. I not only adapt my support to meet the diverse needs of students but also teach them metacognition, empowering them to improve their revision strategies and learning processes.
I have chosen to focus on tutoring to allow for greater flexibility, so I can spend more time with my two young children and support my husband, who is Headteacher at one of the best state schools in London. My dedication to making Biology accessible and enjoyable has driven my success as a tutor, helping students achieve their fullest potential.
